What's Fair is Fair!

Tomorrow morning, the US World Cup soccer team takes on African nation, Algeria, with a spot in the second round on the line. The scenario for advancement can be simple for the Americans. Win, and they're in. A tie will require the US to lean on other teams' results. No one wants that.

The US team will not have to wait long to find out if they do advance after the game. Awhile back, the World Cup instituted a rule where all four teams play the final Group game at the same time. Did the higher ups want to create an atmosphere of suspense? Perhaps. Each team with a fighting chance would go into the final Group game not knowing the other result.

After doing some digging, I found out the real reason for this change, and it's a rather ugly story. The 1982 World Cup, held in Spain, went down in the history books as one of the most controversial due to the scheme of two countries, West Germany and Austria. On Day One of the tournament, Algeria (yes, the same nation the US wrangles with tomorrow!) scored one of the greatest World Cup upsets ever with a 2-1 victory over West Germany. The Algerians played inspired soccer and had a chance of advancing to the next round. In the final match of group play between West Germany and Austria, Algeria had played its final group game the day before. The table and the possible scenarios for advancement had been set. A West German win by 1 or 2 goals would qualify both West Germany and Austria. A larger German victory would qualify Algeria over Austria, and a draw or an Austrian win would eliminate the Germans.

What happened during the game was pretty disheartening and downright disgraceful. West Germany scored 10 minutes in. For the rest of the game, Austria and West Germany kicked the ball around nonchalantly, as if they were playing at a practice session. No further goals were scored, the result held, and both teams were through.

While the situation was deplored by even people from the scheming countries, nothing could be done. A country's hopes were dashed as Algeria was denied a berth in the second round. Perhaps, it a bit of justice was served when Italy beat Germany 3–1 in the World Cup Final that year.

After that unfortunate incident, FIFA changed the rules for the timing of the final group games.

Be Agressive. B-E- Agressive.

The time has come to answer the age-old question, "Is cheerleading really a sport?" Varying opinions can now be set aside, as a federal judge in Connecticut is going to tell us. On Monday, Judge Stefan Underhill began presiding over a U.S. District Court trial to decide whether cheerleading can be counted as a sport by schools looking for ways to meet gender-equality requirements.

The decision is part of a lawsuit filed last year by the members of the women's volleyball team at Quinnipiac University (known for all of those polls) in Connecticut. The school decided to eliminate women's volleyball in favor of a competitive cheer squad because it was cheaper. Apparently, pom poms and mini-skirts cost less than knee pads and volleyballs?!

The hullabaloo is due to the adherence to Title IX, the 1972 federal law that mandates equal opportunities for both men and women in athletics. An activity is considered a sport under Title IX if it has coaches, practices, competitions during a defined season, and a governing organization. The activity also must have competition as its primary goal—not just the support of other athletic teams.

So, what do we think? In the description above of what an activity encompasses, I would have to agree that cheerleading should be considered a sport. What amazes me about this whole situation is that the school needs to cut one sport in order to accommodate another, and that the deciding factor is cold, hard cash.

Slightly off topic...well somewhat related. Why didn't cheerleaders ever cheer at soccer games? As a soccer player, I was always bummed that we did not have the ladies strutting their stuff in support of our team. I mean, after all, our soccer team won the State championship twice in high school, and the football and basketball teams were lucky to finish above .500. Perhaps the decision to cheer or not to cheer was based on the fact that we were so good, we didn't need any support.

Don't Blame the Ref

America, and the world, are abuzz today with the news that the "US got robbed" during its World Cup soccer match with Slovenia. It's true. Malian referee Koman Coulibaly did make a bogus call at the end of the game. When Maurice Edu slotted home the game-winning goal off a free kick, there was no foul. This is true. There was no offside infraction either. It was a totally incorrect call.

We are outraged. Americans everywhere are livid and feel that the World Cup win was snatched from their very own hands. This may well be true. But the thing is, in sports, you can only control certain things.

Had the game been tied 0-0 and Edu's strike was the only goal, perhaps I'd think differently. But, the game unfolded in a different way, with the US asleep at the wheel for the entire first half. Had they not let in those two goals early, they would never have been in desperation mode for the entire second half.

Having played the game myself, I can appreciate the ebb and flow of each match. As frustrated as I was after the game today, I just kept thinking that the US team played an amazing 45 minutes. If they would have played an amazing 90 minutes, none of the calls or refereeing would have been an issue.

Amazingly, the US is still in contention for one of two berths into the next round. With a win over Algeria, the US is in. There are a multitude of other scenarios should the US draw, but let's hope it does not come to that.

In all my years of soccer, I was never delayed en route to a game by an elephant. Unfortunately, the US soccer team was not as lucky.

World Cup Fever!

The greatest tournament in the world featuring the world's most popular sport began today in South Africa. The opening game featured host nation South Africa and Mexico, who dueled it out to a 1-1 draw before 84,000 rowdy fans. South Africa surged to an lead early in the second half, only to give it up on a goal by Mexico’s Rafael Marquez in the 79th minute. The South Africans were so close to a dream victory as they opened the 2010 World Cup in their home country.

Here in the States, no doubt all avid fans will be glued to the TV tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. as the American squad opens its World Cup campaign against perennial power England!

Christina Aguilera New Album Drops Today

Today is the day!! Christina Aguilera's highly anticipated new album BIONIC is out! Head out to your local retail store to pick up a copy or and download the album from iTunes.

I've heard a few tracks from the new album, and I have to say that I'm not that impressed. Christina is trying to compete with the Lady Gagas of the world and unfortunately, she does not measure up. Which is a shame, because she is still one of the most talented singers around.

Strange Alliances

Surprising tidbit from over the weekend: Elton John performed at Rush Limbaugh's 4th wedding. Apparently, on some issues, they do share common ground.

Elton John has always been someone who goes for the jugular, shocking audiences. His performance with Eminem a few years back comes to mind.

Not sure what to think about this...but most of me wants to say this is a grand publicity stunt.

All the Rumors are True - iPhone 4 is Here

Here's the latest from Steve Jobs, who spoke today at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference in San Francisco, California.

The iPad has sold 2 million units in just two months of release! Farmville, the most popular game application on Facebook, will now be available on the iPhone later this month. Farmville allows users to run a virtual farm by planting, growing and harvesting virtual crops and trees as well as raising livestock. I continually deny Farmville requests, as I have a day job. Apparently, 82.4 million users of the application do not.

The iPhone now has over 200,000 applications for your downloading pleasure. The new version will also offer Netflix and Guitar Hero.

And now, to the main event! This, of course, is the unveiling of the much-publcized, much-hyped brand new iPhone. It turns out that all the rumors are true. The new phone has a thinner, squared-off design, which confirms the previously leaked photos of the new device that made the rounds online a few weeks ago. Get ready for redesigned buttons, a front-facing camera, a flash on the rear camera, a secondary microphone for noise cancellation, and improved antennas integrated right into the design. The new iPhone 4 (official name) is 26% thinner than the iPhone 3GS and Jobs proclaims that it is the "thinnest smartphone ever."

The new "retina display" is described as otherworldly, with its display of 326 pixels per inch better than the human eye can even process. As expected, there will be 960 x 640 pixels of resolution on the 3.5-inch display. This breaks new ground in the world of cell phones, and approaches what most small laptops offer.

Jobs promised 40% more talk time with the new iPhone whiich is now powered by Apple's A4 chip. The Camera is upgraded to 5 megapixels, with 5x digital zoom and an illuminated sensor. iPhone 4 also records video in HD resolution.

I've been waiting to hear the latest info on the new iPhone, as I have to make a big decision RE: what kind of phone I will be getting this year. My current, beat up flip phone is on its last leg. I have always leaned towards getting an iPhone, but now the Motorola Droid, Google Nexus One and Palm Pre have all proven to be formidable alternatives.

I am going to wait it out as long as I can before I make a decision. Of course, as soon as I get a new phone it will already be outdated. Such is the state of technology in our great nation these days.

Top 10 Earning American Idols

Forbes Magazine has released a top ten list of the American Idol alums who have garnered the most bucks over the past year. Forbes' "rankings of the top-earning American Idol alums are based on earnings from album sales, concerts, endorsements and other income from May 2009 through April 2010."

Forbes reporter Dirk Smillie notes that "the pop music market, now saturated with close to 100 of the show's alums, is showing signs of Idol fatigue. Earnings by some of Idol's top vocalists have nosedived over the past year. The show that reshaped television and the music business just isn't minting cash for its stars like it once did."

No. 10: Kris Allen
$672,000

No. 9: Clay Aiken
$800,000

No. 8: David Archuleta
$1.4 million

No. 7: Jordin Sparks
$1.8 million

No. 6: Jennifer Hudson
$2 million

No. 5: David Cook
$2.3 million

No. 4: Kellie Pickler
$4.3 million

No. 3: Chris Daughtry
$5.4 million

No. 2: Carrie Underwood
$7 million

No. 1: Kelly Clarkson
$8 million

There are definitely some surprises on this list. Kellie Pickler # 4? Really? Wow, those red high heels and certain "enhancements" shall we say are definitely paying off. Original Idol Kelly Clarkson continues to rule the charts almost 10 years after her triumph on the original incarnation of the show, which is truly remarkable.

It will be interesting to see which of these stars will fade away and who will continue to shine in the years to come.

Stay tuned!

Will David Beckham Bring Down the US?

I came across an interesting article today about the possibility of David Beckham playing a coaching/advisory role for the English national soccer team during World Cup 2010. The move is strategic on the part of the Brits, as Beckham has spent the last few years playing for the L.A. Galaxy of US's Major League Soccer. Theory goes that he knows the ins and outs, strengths and weaknesses of the American players, and as a result, the English can prepare accordingly for victory.

We all remember the major hullabaloo a few years ago when Beckham, armed with his celebrity wife Posh Spice, was brought over to America for what seemed like a gazillion dollars. Becks was donned the "savior" of the fledgling MLS.

I never bought into the hype then, just like I don't buy into it now. When I strapped on my boots and stepped onto the pitch, I could care less about the opponent or the scouting report.

You play to win, try your best, and at the end of the day the better team will be victorious. That's all I need to know. Lets hope Team USA abides by the same mantra.

The US plays its first match of World Cup 2010 on June 12 against England.

Charlie Davies left off US World Cup training roster

In a surprising decision, US soccer star Charlie Davies will not get the chance to represent USA at World Cup 2010. The star forward's name was left off the training camp roster. Davies was attempting to come back to the national team seven months after a nearly fatal car crash left him with broken bones, a ruptured bladder, and bleeding in the brain. I was doing some research today for a new Colorful Places article we will be running entitled "Best New Travel Gadgets" and I came across a cool site which showcases a number of soccer-shaped gadgets. Check it out and place your orders just in time for the FIFA World Cup 2010 starting next month. Awesome!

My favorite gizmo is the "Soccer iPod Dock":

Betty White Delivers...

Watched the Saturday Night Live episode last night, and it definitely lived up to the hype in my opinion. Betty was as sharp as ever and in almost every skit. It's amazing what the 88 1/2 year old funny lady can do!

Here's my favorite sketch with favorite players Ana Gasteyer and Molly Shannon returning to revive their Delicious Dish skit:

Mother's Day in Orlando

For those of you in the Orlando area, check out the Epcot Flower and Garden Festival for a place where Disney cartoon characters come to life! The floral exhibition is a perfect getaway for your visit to Bluegreen's two Orlando area resorts: Orlando's Sunshine Resort and The Fountains.

This is your day, Mom

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there in the world. I certainly don't understand what it takes to be a mother, but I am so grateful to have one of the greatest mom's ever. Mom, you've always been there for me. You've always helped me pick up the pieces when I was down, and you are, for sure, my number one fan. Over the years, your strength and guidance have carried me through the darkest and best of times.

Thank you, and I love you.

Your son.

Give Thanks to Yo' Momma

Don't forget this Sunday is Mother's Day, that one day a year where sons and daughters try to give back. I myself will be heading up to Palm Beach County and sharing some Chinese food with the fam (mom's request)!

Take a look at Billboard's list of hot momma's from the world of music. I have to agree with their assessment.

Is American Idol past its prime?

Although American Idol is still the #1 show in the country, its audience seems to be dwindling rapidly. The ratings juggernaut posted its lowest ratings since 2002, causing many to believe the decline will only continue.

What do you think? I have to admit I was a regular watcher a few years ago, but now in the 10th season I'm over it. In a big way.

This is pretty cool though. Check out Lady Gaga's recent performance on the TV Show:

I'm still on the lookout for when Lady Gaga will be coming down to Miami. I hear there will be a big announcement Monday regarding a stop right down the street from Bluegreen's Solara Surfside Resort. That would be awesome to see her in concert.

I watched this video and said wow at least nine times. I think I am finally buying into the hype. The stats in the video are eye-opening.

My Funny Valentine...

Over the last few years, I've come to appreciate the music of yesteryear, and specifically the songs/sound of Ole' Blue eyes himself, Frank Sinatra. What a golden era the pop music legend lived in and how I wish that I could transport back to that time just to catch one great performance of his. I picture myself sitting in a smoky lounge surrounded by men and women dressed to the nines. I sip a tasty cocktail while Mr. Sinatra starts to belt out some balads, laughing and joking with the crowd as he moves through his set. Ahh, what a glorious time to be alive.

I also grew attached to Frank's music when I was growing up because his song repertoire fits nicely with my baritone voice. I've been known to grab a mic and sing on occasion, and last night turned into an impromptu performance night. Out with some friends at a local Fort Lauderdale establishment, we cheered when it turned out to be Karaoke night. Well, everyone else cheered as I became somewhat nervous as my friends encouraged me to perform.

In thinking about what I was going to sing, I chose "My Funny Valentine" because it was a song I knew pretty well and I figured I wouldn't screw it up. I have to say the nerves that I felt prior to performing immediately melted away as the music came on. I think I did a pretty good job, as the crowd seemed to applaud very graciously.

Here's the master himself singing the classic tune:

I hope that I did him justice last night. There is nothing like performing on stage, spotlight on you, singing to the crowd. What a rush!

What Happens in Vegas.....

With summer right around the corner, the topic of conversation with my friends inevitably turns to planning a vacation. Once I plan to a trip, I make sure to travel light as I want no hassles at the airport. But, where to go? Where can I get the most for my buck? Where can I see pop music stars like Cher, Barry Manilow, and even KC & the Sunshine Band. Where can I get my game on and challenge my luck in order to win cash and prizes? The answer, my friends, is Las Vegas, of course! My close compadres will be mesmerized by the bright city lights and the allure of the expansive Las Vegas Strip. Perhaps, a trip to Sin City and a stay at Bluegreen's deluxe resort Club 36 is in order! We will definitely relish the chance to see and be seen at all of the renowned Las Vegas hotspots.

Filled with Glee!

Busy as ever these days with my challenging job as a Web Copywriter for Bluegreen Resorts, I finally had a moment last night to catch up with one of my favorite new shows, Glee! As a lover of pop music, I've been drawn to the show all year. It is a little fantastical, but it works. I mean come on now. The football jocks and choir nerds singing together in harmony and the "Cheerios" walking around in uniform à la Bring It On? That's not how I remember high school. Brushing that aside for the moment, I can appreciate the vast talent of the show's stars and really enjoy the musical performance numbers. Favorite performances include stirring renditions of "Don't Stop Believin'," "Somebody to Love," "Jump," "Don't Rain on My Parade" and "Sweet Caroline."

Here's the version of "Don't Stop Believin":

Due to the huge success of the show, a "Glee Live! In Concert!" tour is planned for two weeks this May. In addition to stops in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, the sweet singing stars will hit Phoenix on May 18th. The performance at Dodge Theatre is right up the street from Bluegreen's Cibola Vista Resort and Spa, one of the best Arizona spa resorts around.

Xtina is Back with Bionic Album

Multiple Grammy-award winner Christina Aguilera is back with a brand new album, set to drop June 8th in stores everywhere.

Hear pop music diva discuss the new album:

No doubt, Ms. Aguilera will be headed on tour this year. Stay tuned in the coming months for updates on when she will be hitting Bluegreen's awesome resort destination cities.

All you Chelsea Handler fans, listen up! The successful, quick-witted comedienne takes her E! show on the road. The Comedians of Chelsea Lately are coming to Miami Beach on Friday, May 8th for a night performance at the Jackie Gleason Theater. If you are planning a little Florida beach vacation, why not book a reservation at Bluegreen's Solara Surfside Resort?

The 2010 tour includes funny people Jo Koy, The Sklar Brothers, and Jen Kirkman, regular's on the show. The live performance will also feature special guest Chuy!

Back in St. Olaf....

The time is here. Beloved television star Betty White will be hosting Saturday Night Live on May 8th.

Here is the promo:

The smart as a whip comedienne caught fire recently with a string of hit movies and a hilarious Super Bowl commercial. She even had a Facebook page with diehard fans spurring a movement to have her host SNL.

Of course, Ms. White is probably best known for her role as daffy Rose Nylund on the hit sitcom 'Golden Girls.' The 80's and early 90's tv show was set in Miami, right down the street from Bluegreen's Solara Surfside Resort.

Shakira Shakes Up World Cup 2010

Two of my favorite things converged today when I found that pop music diva Shakira has recorded the theme song for soccer's 2010 World Cup tournament, being held this June throughout South Africa. Shakira has been shaking her hips for nearly a decade and has sold over 30 million records in that timespan.

Take a listen below to "Waka Waka," chosen by FIFA as the official song of the World Cup.

I am so psyched for this year's World Cup. Maybe this year will be USA's time to shine. We will see. Now, all I need is for Bluegreen to get a resort in South Africa, and I'll be set!

Whitney Live in UK

Well, the jury is still out on Whitney Houston's comeback. She is now performing in the UK, after several stints here in the U.S. There are still so many rumors out there about her "extracurricular activities" and how her once amazing voice is now shot.

You be the judge. Here's a clip of her performance:

While I was never a huge fan of the pop music star, I always thought she had a voice on par with Mariah's and Christina's. But sadly, time and substances seem to have taken a toll on the once pristine singing voice of the former Mrs. Bobby Brown. Don't worry, Bluegreen fans, I checked. Her tour will not be near a Bluegreen resort any time soon!

Justin Bieber: The New Hanson

In the last few months, pop singer Justin Bieber has taken over the pop world, climbing to the top of the charts with his saccharine "tween" pop songs. And the fans continue to eat it up.

Here is his latest song "Baby Featuring Ludacris":

Keep an eye out for his upcoming tour within the next few months. No doubt, the pop youngster will be performing near a Bluegreen resort in the future. I can assure you that your kids will be begging to go to the Bieber concert on your next family fun vacation.

Train stops at Hershey

Pop rock band Train, which consists of Patrick Monahan (lead vocalist), Jimmy Stafford (lead guitarist) and Scott Underwood (drummer), is coming to Hershey, Pennsylvania this summer on July 25th for a performance at Hershey Stadium.

Take a look at the video for "Hey, Soul Sister":

This song is tearing up the charts and currently sits at #6 on Billboard's Pop Song Chart. Planning to make a weekend out of it on your Hershey vacation and need a place to stay? Book a reservation at Bluegreen's Suites at Hershey.

Must Read - Bluegreen Owner Bikes Across America!

Dave Livingstone is a faithful Bluegreen owner from Canada with an incredible story of dedication, strength and determination and he needs our help. In 2002, Mr. Livingstone suffered the tragic loss of his wife from lung cancer. She never smoked a day in her life. From that moment forward Dave made it a point to get involved with the Canadian Lung Association through its annual weekend 200km bike ride. This year, he’s got his sights set on going the distance with the American Lung Association’s Big Ride Across America. He’ll partake on an intense 3,000-mile journey from Seattle, WA to Washington D.C. in just 48 days–40 days of riding and 8 days of rest. It is tentatively scheduled to start June 21, 2010. That’s a lot of biking for any one person. Good thing Dave is young. He’s 68.

Mr. Livingstone spent most of his life involved in international business and in that time developed many relationships across the border here in America. That’s why he decided to help out the ALA this time around–out of his respect for the United States and his understanding that lung disease has no boundaries. This isn’t the first time he’s made a ride like this, and it won’t be his last.

In 2008, he rode across Canada without any major donations to help him make the trip (all expenses came out of his pocket). With the support of a few VW dealerships along the way, Mr. Livingstone managed to attract the local press, radio and TV coverage during many of his stops–each time he plugged the participating VW dealerships. Now, as a Canadian making the trip for an American charity, the press coverage should be substantial.

This is, first and foremost, an incredible opportunity to help a great man achieve something even greater. Not only that, but by helping to sponsor Dave, we could ride along with him in spirit.

In order to make this trip however, Dave needs our help. Participants have to raise $8,000 total, with $6,000 of it due before June 1, 2010 to secure a spot in the ride. That’s not too much to ask considering he will be riding his bike across the entire country. The Big Ride Across America is an enormous gesture of generosity and effort with all proceeds and donations going to the American Lung Association. It’s easy to contribute to Dave’s cause and it would be extra-special to see him at the finish line. To make a donation in support of Dave Livingstone’s Big Ride Across America, please click here.

Pop Crossover Lady Antebellum

Lady Antebellum is a Country music group hailing from the great state of Tennessee. But with this mega hit, the group has crossed over into the Pop music world and is currently tearing up the charts. I've taken a liking to this song as it sort of invades your soul and doesn't let go. We all can relate to that lost love or the one that got away, probably a familiar feeling to many of us. The group's tour hits Knoxville, Tennessee on April 22nd - a couple hours drive from Bluegreen's MountainLoft and Laurel Crest.

Boom Boom Pow in Arizona

Fergie, Will I Am and the gang from Black Eyed Peas hit the Valley of the Sun for a stop on their tour. On March 31st, the group will be performing at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Arizona. The stadium is quick 20 minute drive from Bluegreen's Cibola Vista Resort and Spa.

To me, the hottest track on the The E.N.D. album is ”Meet Me Halfway”.

Sparks Fly in NJ

Season Six of American Idol produced mega-star Jordin Sparks, daughter of New York Giants great Phillippi Sparks, after she emerged victorious after performances like this. The pop princess continues to thrive three years after her victory on America's most popular television show. Her tour stops in Atlantic City on April 24th. Sparks will belt out hits like "Battlefield" and "S.O.S" at the Tropicana Casino. For Bluegreen owners staying at Bluegreen at Atlantic Palace, be sure to take a break from the slots and check out the Idol alum in concert.

Alicia Keys in NYC

Check out Alicia Keys in concert last night in NYC. The songstress made a stop in her hometown on her successful Freedom Tour. The crowd roared when special guests Beyonce and Jay-Z stepped onto the stage.

To celebrate her success, I recommend that Keys and company head south on the Garden State Parkway and check out the Boardwalk in Atlantic City. They will hit the jackpot with a stay at Bluegreen's Atlantic Palace Resort.

Swift Gallops into Virginia Horse Country

Remember this? After the hoopla at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Taylor Swift skyrocketed to fame and took over both the Country and Pop music charts with hits like "We Belong Together" and "Love Story." She won four Grammys this year, and was the youngest artist ever to win the Grammy for Album of the Year.

Currently on tour, Ms. Swift rolls into Charlottesville, Virginia for a performance this Saturday, March 20th. The concert takes place about a half hour from Bluegreen's Shenandoah Crossing.

Lady Gaga / Beyonce Telephone Movie

Ok, so Lady Gaga and Beyonce did not make a movie. But, you have to check out their new "Telephone" video. My friends and I took a gander last night, and we all agreed that it's pretty amazing. The nine minute masterpiece plays like a action-packed movie, complete with the over-the-top theatrics that we've come to expect from the pop powerhouse, Lady Gaga.

Chock full of product placement, the video serves as a walking advertisement for Lady Gag's own Heartbeats headphones, HP Envy Laptop, Miracle Whip, Diet Coke and Virgin Mobile, just to name a few. Seriously check out the video. It's crazy good.

My friends and I were talking about going to see Lady Gaga in concert. I missed her concert here in January. She's currently on tour overseas, but there's buzz that she'll be coming back to perform in the States soon. We may just do a weekend getaway and book a stay at one of Bluegreen's awesome resorts. I definitely want to check out some that I haven't been to, like Bluegreen Club 36 in Vegas and
Club La Pension in New Orleans.

10 Billion Strong and Growing!

The world of downloadable music has reached a milestone. Apple's iTunes has sold 10 Billion Tracks. Link to that site for a list of the all-time downloaded songs. Black Eyed Peas currently own the top spot with "I Gotta Feeling." I admit, I have that song, and boy, that was big last year. I remember adding it to every Music mix I would make for parties during the spring. I got sick of it, and lately I've been having a change of heart, adding it back to my workout "Power mix."

My music collection of 660 songs on my iPod is paltry compared to the rest of my generation. I remember my first year in college when I downloaded 100 songs from Napster, back when it was free. Gosh, so much time has passed and so many technological advances have surfaced. Obviously, Apple was light years ahead and fostered a keen ability to develop the next big thing.

Speaking of being in tune with what people want, Bluegreen always seems to be ahead of the curve. Whether it's building great resorts from the ground up in Orlando and Las Vegas, or annexing existing resorts in prime locations like New Orleans and Phoenix, Bluegreen remains at the forefront of the vacation industry.

And, this is just the beginning, which is the coolest part....

Carrie Underwood in Atlantic City

Continuing with the American Idol theme, country queen Carrie Underwood heads to Atlantic City for a March 19th performance at Boardwalk Hall. Her hit "Before He Cheats" was a huge pop music crossover hit. I really liked that song, though I hope no one ever comes up my car with a "Louisville slugger" with rage, taking out "both headlights." Yikes!!

Bluegreen at Atlantic Palace would be my choice for a great place to stay if I could get to this concert. The Atlantic city resort offers dazzling accommodations in the heart of the Atlantic City boardwalk. With Bluegreen in the mix, good times are a sure bet.

American Idol's Danny Gokey to perform in Myrtle Beach

Danny Gokey, one of the better contestants from American Idol is heading to Myrtle Beach on my birthday, April 2nd, for a performance at the House of Blues. I guess I am going to have to book a stay at one of our awesome Bluegreen resorts: Carolina Grande / Harbour Lights / SeaGlass Tower.

Check out Danny's performance last week on Idol...not too bad.

Michael Bublé's hot show down in Phoenix

Grammy award-winning singer Michael Bublé heads down to the Valley of the Sun on April 8th for a performance at the US Airways Center in Phoenix. Bublé has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide. Check out Bublé's performance on Saturday Night Live a couple of months ago. For an awesome place to stay, Bluegreen owners need to check out Bluegreen's news resort, Cibola Vista Resort and Spa.

Blues Traveler at Culture Room

Calling all John Popper fans out there! Blues Traveler is coming to Fort Lauderdale's Culture Room on April 23 and 24th. For all of you Bluegreen owners staying at Solara Surfside, just hop on Route 95 and head north for a half hour to get to Culture Club. The venue is pretty cool, with an intimate setting where you can really feel the music. Should be a rockin' time...

Repeat Offender Richard Marx is back

For all those music lovers planning a vacation to Orlando, set aside some time to go see Richard Marx in concert. The singer/songwriter with those great 80's hits like "Right Here Waiting" and "Satisfied" is planning a solo acoustic set on March 19th at the Plaza Theatre. It's nice to see him back in action. Looking for a great Bluegreen Resort to rest your head after the concert? Check out The Fountains or Orlando's Sunshine Resort.

I remember getting his Repeat Offender Album in 1989. On a trip to Puerto Rico, I remember lying down on my grandparents' hammock and listening to my Walkman, playing the songs over and over. Cassette tapes?? Walkman?? Seems like the stone age now...

Alicia Keys in Vegas

Grammy award winning singer/songwriter Alicia Keys hits Las Vegas for a stop during her Element of Freedom tour. She will perform at the historic Mandalay Bay Resort on April 9th. Element of Freedom is the songstress' fourth studio album. The album debuted at number two on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and sold 417,000 copies in its first week. Jenny from the Block

Anyone catch last night's Saturday Night Live episode? I watched bits and pieces, and overall, I was under-whelmed. I wondered out loud to my friends why J-Lo was hosting, and I guessed that either she had a new movie or she had a new album coming out. I will say that I've always been a fan of J-Lo's music back to the days of Waiting for Tonight and Jenny from the Block. She belongs in the category of catchy dance music singers (like Madonna, Britney)who make music that I enjoy. Her singing efforts last night confirmed that she does NOT belong in the category of those artists with the best vocal skills i.e. Christina / Mariah.

Wonder why her her label dropped her last week?

On a positive note, the Besos Y Lagrimas skit was hilarious. Laughed out loud - repeatedly.

John Mayer Hits New Orleans

Listen up, music fans. The Daughters singer / songwriter, who has dated a string of Hollwood beauties like Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson, heads to the Big Easy on March 10th for a concert at New Orleans Arena. Bluegreen owners looking for a place to stay should check out Club La Pension for a wonderful stay in the French Quarter.

Dawg

So, I caught last night's episode of American Idol. Wow, I was not impressed at all. It was guys' night. I have watched American Idol for the last few years. I even thought about trying out a few times. A few years back they had tryouts in Orlando. I most likely would have booked a stay at the Fountains, but from what I gather, it's a needle in a haystack chance of making it. I literally had to change the channel and put the Olympics on. It's a shame, really, for a television show that claims to be a "talent competition."

Smooth Operator

Apparently, Sade is back and she's back on top of the charts. Who knew? I kind of dig that Smooth Operator song, though I was 3 when it came out. It seems to pop up in movies here and there, and it immediately puts me at ease. Soothing, though I don't really relate to the jet set lifestyle she's singing about...

Picture Perfect

I was doing some research today for an article I was writing and came across a great site that gives tips on taking vacation photos. Check out this cool site. This will really help me out when I take my maiden journey to New Orleans at the end of next month. I am psyched about my trip the Big Easy and about staying here.

One of the things I learned about taking great photos on your trip is that you need to tell a story - create a narrative. That got me thinking about the stories of my past - the ones that I learned only through pictures. I never knew my grandmother. She died when I was three months old from ovarian cancer. Aside from stories my family has told me, what I cherish most are the old pictures that painted a picture of what her life was like.

When I was a little kid, I used to sneak into my parents' bedroom and take out the old family photos from their dresser. I can still remember the smell of the pictures. It had a strong scent, which was oddly familiar, even though the pictures were taken before I was born. There were pictures of my parents' wedding. My grandmother looked so proud on that day. There were pictures of my grandmother at family parties, laughing and carrying on. She looked like she enjoyed life to the fullest. She was definitely the life of the party. There was one picture of my grandmother dancing on a checkered dance floor, lit up with a dozen colors. I'm pretty sure that was the 70's. That must have been a fun decade!

One of the last pictures that I remember was taken a few months before my grandmother died. It could have been around the time when I was born or just before. My grandmother, sadly, looked sick - like she had lost some weight. Still, through it all, she had a smile on her face. Despite the pain she must have been feeling, she still managed to have a smile on her face.

That picture was so powerful, and the collection of pictures told the story of my grandmother's great life. For me, the pictures live on in my mind and in my heart. That is what pictures can do. They capture the moments of our lives or they tell the story of the loved ones who have come before us.

Stomach in my throat

Last month, one of my friends had a birthday and we all planned a Road Trip. Normally, I love these. I love getting away from the ritual - the routine - of my daily life. We all decided to go to Orlando to visit the Parks. I get to Orlando a few times a year, whether it's to visit a great resort or stay with family or friends. It's the perfect drive-to destination from where I live in South Florida. How I used to drive 8 hours each way from home to college (New York to Virginia) back in the day amazes me still.

Anyway, I will admit that I have never been a fan of amusement parks in general. I don't really get afraid of things. What gets me is that "stomach in your throat" feeling. I hate it. Just thinking about it gets me queasy. So, of course, I agreed to the trip with a bit of trepidation. Never one to be a drag at the party, I knew I would force myself to go on every ride. I was not going to be that loser sitting on the sideline missing the action.

So, we go on some of the regular rides and I do fine. Then, we get to ‘Hollywood Rip, Ride, Rockit’ - the new ride they opened last year. There is no Express Lane for the ride because it was new. I CANNOT believe this. I had to endure 90 minutes of waiting – time for me to think about the ride and how I was going to get through it. My palms were sweating. I was feeling dizzy. I see kids around 10 or 11, laughing with their friends. How can these little pipsqueaks be fearless? Here I am almost done with my twenties and I’m scared out of my mind.

I’m buckled into my seat – in the first row of course. It’s the best spot to enjoy the death drop. The ride begins and there is the ascent up to the top and then the usual drop straight down before the twists and turns. That’s when the “stomach in my throat” feeling usually hits. For some reason, this time was different. I didn’t get that feeling. Maybe it was because I kept my eyes open. It is definitely true that when you close your eyes, it makes it worse. After the ride was over, one phrase reverberated through my head.

“THAT WAS AWESOME.”

I was happy to face my fears. I just needed a little nudge from my friends. Sometimes that is all you need. All I needed to do was take a short car trip to Orlando.
